Well it looks like a rather immature and stupid PC is going forego his pension for going that bit too far. I watched the footage along with my shift and we all winced see him push Ian Tomlinson to the ground.
From a personal view I can't see how the actions can be justified but I would quickly add that I wasn't there and I don't know what was going through the officers head at the time. It's all very unfortunate and I don't think ALL of us officers should be tarred with the same brush i.e. aggressive, violent, arseholes. No doubt he is a normal response officer by day and has got a head rush from the events of the day.
I wouldn't have my job if I even displayed a hint of it so any haters out there can give us a break.

I concur that, on the face of it, a baton strike would take some justification. As for the shove, just a common assault. You and I both have probably had to use more force than that to arrest a stroppy drunk. Take away the death and common assault's all you have left under the criminal law to level at the officer concerned. So, if a congenitally weak heart or other circumstances are revealed in his pathology, the overall judgement from the Coroner will likely as not cause as much fury and debate as if he really had been `beaten to death`. Heads the police lose, tails, they don't win and the deceased is still deceased, mourned by his family and with his death still being regretted by every right thinking police officer in the land.
Your response was the same as mine. The trouble was also that his colleagues took no action either assisting the victim or dare I say it arresting the officer. If one of them had done so the standing of the MPD in the eyes of the general public would have risen to new heights, even if in the end it was NFA.
